The Other Romagna area consists of the foothill, hill and mountain areas of the provinces of Ravenna, Forlì-Cesena and Rimini.

This territory is characterized by homogeneity, both from the socio-economic and environmental points of view: forests, parks and nature reserves, hot springs, “deposits" of quality agricultural productions recur all along the Romagna Apennine ridges, from Faenza to Rimini. These natural resources are so deeply rooted in local history that they have given valuable stimulus to the development of services and tourism businesses. At the same time, a process has been initiated to systematize the new tourism supply, in order to connect organically with the cultural, natural and traditional heritage of the different localities.

The area called "The Other Romagna" includes 34 municipalities with a total population of almost 100,000, and covers an area over 2000 sq Km. The highest percentage of inhabitants, 86%, is settled in the High Mountain areas. The province of Forlì-Cesena covers over 75% of this area, with 18 municipalities. Next comes the Province of Rimini with 11 municipalities and then Province of Ravenna, with 5.

Origins of the territory and geological evolution

The aerial view of the area called "The Other Romagna" resembles an imaginary quadrilateral, corresponding to the Romagna region itself, enclosed by two obvious borders, the Adriatic Sea to the east and the eastern slope of the Apennines to the west, and delimited in the north west and south east by two lines roughly perpendicular to the Adriatic sea and the Apennine ridge. If we exclude from this territory the plains that occupy approximately 2 sevenths of it, we are left with hills and mountains, that is, what has been called "The Other Romagna".

Promotion and and development

Now that we are over the period in which national economic trends led many to leave the places of their family history, people have regained possession of agricultural resources and a careful restoration of buildings (fortresses, castles, palaces, churches, abbeys and medieval rural churches) is taking place. In these buildings, the offspring of history, today we can visit museums with a rich archaeological and historical heritage, where contemporary exhibitions and musical events are also organized. These memories have developed the culture of the popular festival, which brings people out into the squares and streets and becomes a "sagra" when it features the fruits of the land, those products that in the past provided native sustenance: chestnuts, fruits, vegetables, grapes, grains and anything else that fed the people of these lands.
Today we want to save and promote everything that was born and raised under the sky and that flows and lives underground, such as the very ancient and precious hot springs of Bagno di Romagna, Brisighella and Riolo Terme, which keep providing well being thanks to the knowledge that people have acquired about them. And then again under the rock, thanks to the expert guidance of local people, we can find out about the wonders of underground caves and underground waterways. Moreover, all the green that surrounds us completely is at our disposal: the green roads winding through the hills among olive groves and vineyards and, climbing towards the peaks of the Apennines, the protected parks, the chestnut and beech woods, and the thick forests.
