LA MAIELLETTA HIKE FROM BOCCA DI VALLE TO SAN LIBERATORE A MAIELLA

On this hike you will discover the authentic and unspoilt nature of the Majella National Park, a green, rich and wild land, characterized by century-old beech woods and majestic barren peaks, flowery meadows and paths leading to solitary hermitages set in the rock. The route goes through landscape of incomparable beauty, and habitats inhabited by otters, wolves, deer, wild boar and chamois.

The hike starts at Bocca di Valle (Guardiagrele) and ends at the Monastery of San Liberatore a Maiella (Serramonacesca), one of the most important examples of Romanesque architecture in Abruzzo.

The route is 21.7-km long, to be covered in 3 days and two nights (10h and 30' hiking time).

STAGE 1 - BOCCA DI VALLE AND THE VILLAGE OF GUARDIAGRELE

Day 1: Between nature and culture

Arrival at Bocca di Valle. Here we are at approximately 5 km from the town of Guardiagrele, 650 metres above sea level.

STAGE 2 - FROM BOCCA DI VALLE TO PASSOLANCIANO

Day 2: San Giovanni waterfalls and the breathtaking views from La Maielletta

Right from the start, we are surrounded by a natural scenery of exceptional beauty. After a pleasant hike through the woods we reach the spectacular San Giovanni Waterfall at 1080 metres.

STAGE 3 - FROM PASSO LANCIANO TO SAN LIBERATORE A MAIELLA (SERRAMONACESCA)

Day 3: The hermitages and monasteries of La Maiella

This hike, mostly downhill, will take you to the Monastery of San Liberatore a Maiella, an elegant and ancient Romanesque building.
Along this itinerary you can also visit the hermitage of Sant'Onofrio di Serramonacesca, set in the rock on two levels, consisting of the church and living quarters. It is thought that the cave was originally a place of retreat and prayer, and was later converted to agro-pastoral uses.
