Romea Nonantolana Route

This route, accessible also on horseback, starts in Levizzano, in the middle of the Modena hills. The itinerary, which coincides partly with the hiking one, runs in 3 stages along the road used in medieval times by merchants and pilgrims, as documented in an agreement between the municipalities of Modena and Pistoia of 1225.

The itinerary, approximately 70 km long, includes some of the main castles and religious monuments of the medieval period.

Travelling time on horseback:
20 Hours

STAGE 1 - FROM LEVIZZANO RANGONE TO PAVULLO NEL FRIGNANO

The first long stage, from Levizzano Rangone to Pavullo nel Frignano, rises up the left bank of the Guerro river and then climbs Monte Tre Croci, a beautiful place from which one can enjoy a grand view, then goes through Denzano and Ospitaletto.
The route descends, crosses the Rio Torto river, then climbs again to reach Coscogno, with its pieve (rural church) of medieval origins, and then, past Rio Benedello, it reaches the hamlet of the same name. From here, after crossing the Poggio Castro woods, we come to Pavullo, seat of the Castle of Montecuccolo, with its adjoining medieval village.

STAGE 2 - Fanano

The second stage crosses diagonally the valley of the Scoltenna river to reach the town of Fanano, first taking in the village of medieval origins, Renno di Sopra, the Pieve of San Giovanni Battista at Renno and the village of Rocchetta Sandri.

STAGE 3 - ALONG THE VALLEY OF THE OSPITALE TORRENT

The last stage runs along the whole length of the valley of the Ospitale torrent, leading to the historic Pass of Croce Arcana, at an altitude of 1675 m.
In the stretch from Fanano to Ospitale, for lack of alternatives with less traffic, the route follows the paved road in the valley bottom, via Ospitale. The last stretch of the route, leading to the Apennines pass, is much more impressive, with grand views both over Emilia-Romagna valleys and, from the Pass, Tuscan ones.
