DETOUR TO SCAFFAIOLO

This detour involves the last stretch of the route and makes it possible to reach the Duca degli Abruzzi Refuge at Lake Scaffaiolo (1775 m.) through a high mountain landscape of rare beauty, climbing up old mule tracks and passing through isolated villages once inhabited by shepherds.

The detour begins near the hamlet of Ospitale and follows the CAI 411 path until it comes near watershed ridge that separates the valley of the Ospitale torrent from that of the Dardagna torrent. You continue on the CAI 339 and CAI 401 path to Lake Scaffaiolo and the neighbouring Calanca and Calanchetta Passes.

Along the way there are notable small villages, such as that of Cà Cecchino, rising on the best-preserved stretch of the Via Romea road, whose meandering dry stone walls and well-preserved paving make this stretch of route particularly fascinating.
