Scheda GAL

The proactive energy of the Ionian Hills area starts at the hills and rock caves, sweeps through the farmhouses and finally reaches the crystal-clear Ionian sea, in a natural scenery of rare beauty covering 415 sq km.

Municipalities

The area involves eleven municipalities: Carosino, Crispiano, Faggiano, Grottaglie, Monteiasi, Montemesola, Monteparano, Pulsano, Roccaforzata, San Giorgio Jonico, and Statte. These towns, all in the Taranto province, comprise a total population of almost 111,000 people and represent a unique and varied tourist route.

Promotion of the heritage

The local history and landscape are strictly rural, with vineyards and olive groves as beautiful as gardens, and the tourism potential is significant, as the sea is extremely clear and the beaches are well equipped, while historical towns have retained their identity and great charm. The rich tradition of wine and food products, together with the traces of history, the handcrafted ceramics of very high quality and the cave civilization are all assets for a tourism that aims to be active in all seasons, with many important events held throughout the year.
