THE MATILDE PATH (MODENA)

The route runs from Ciano d'Enza to S. Pellegrino in Alpe in 6-7 stages, following the historical route taken in the middle ages to travel to and from Tuscany (Lucca).

Particularly used by the Canossa family, it includes some of the main castles and religious monuments of the period between the 10th and 12th centuries.

Travelling time on foot:
30 Hours

STAGE 1 - ROSSENA, CANOSSA AND CASINA

The first stage crosses the Rio Vico Valley, reaches Rossena and Canossa and then continues towards Casina through a varied landscape of ravines, cultivated fields, woods and chestnut woods.

STAGE 2 - MAROLA AND CARPINETI

The second stage reaches Marola, its Abbey and centuries-old chestnut woods, then continues towards Carpineti, whose rural territory is punctuated with very interesting tower houses and villages.

STAGE 3 - FROM THE CASTLE OF CARPINETI TO THE PIEVE OF TOANO

The third stage reaches the ridge at the Castle of Carpineti, and from here takes the Spallanzani path. The ridge is particularly interesting from a geological point of view.
The route descends to the Secchia river, crosses the Ponte dell'Oca bridge and climbs towards Cavola.
From here it climbs to the Pieve of Toano, passing through the villages of Stiano, Corneto and Manno.

STAGE 4 - FROM CADIGNANO TO S. PELLEGRINO

The fourth stage reaches Cadignano and from here climbs to Romanoro on the road that arrives at the new bridge over the Valoria landslide.
From Romanoro we reach Panigale, where we take the dam's old service road, locally called "il Tracciolino".
From here we climb to Fontanaluccia and then continue towards Pietravolta.
From here the path, passing through Colle del Morto, leads to Roncadello and S. Geminiano. It then reaches the Radici Pass and climbs to S. Pellegrino.
